FIFA World Cup 2026: If you want to watch the games live in Canada, check your visa first.

24 Sep 2025

The FIFA World Cup, taking place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, will be the largest tournament in history. Co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, it will feature a record 48 nations competing in 104 matches across 16 host cities. Among these, Canada will host 13 matches in Toronto and Vancouver, drawing fans from around the world. Notably, the opening match on June 12 at Toronto's BMO Field and key matches on July 18 and 24 at Vancouver's BC Place are expected to be events that will go down in Canadian soccer history. However, to experience the excitement firsthand, obtaining permission to enter Canada is essential. Simply securing match tickets does not guarantee automatic entry.

The Canadian government has not created a separate “FIFA-specific visa” for this World Cup. Currently, the existing systems—the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) and the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)—are the means for fans to enter the country. Posts circulating on social media claiming “Canada has introduced a new re-entry visa for the World Cup” are inaccurate. As of September 2025, neither the Canadian government (IRCC) nor FIFA has announced any such special program. The existing re-entry TRV and eTA will simply continue to apply for this tournament. The rumors circulating on social media stem from misunderstandings about visa policy and confusion caused by a pre-sale ticket event hosted by the credit card company Visa.

The visitor visa is a mandatory permit for citizens of countries requiring entry into Canada, suitable for tourism or short-term stays. There are two types: single-entry and multiple-entry. For fans planning to travel between Toronto and Vancouver, or even to the United States and Mexico during the World Cup, a multiple-entry visa is significantly more advantageous. Conversely, citizens of visa-exempt countries must obtain an eTA when entering by air. The eTA is electronically linked to the passport and valid for up to five years, meaning it can be used not only during the World Cup but also for future visits to Canada. It's crucial to note that a U.S. or Mexican visa does not substitute for a valid entry permit to Canada. Each country has its own distinct entry requirements that must be met separately. Therefore, if you plan to travel between countries following the matches, you must verify the entry procedures for all three countries.

The most crucial point in a visa application is the ‘clarity of the purpose of visit’. Rather than simply stating “travel,” it is advisable to specify a concrete purpose, such as “a short-term stay to attend FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in Toronto and Vancouver.” Including details like participation in the FIFA preliminary draw or an estimated travel plan aligned with the match schedule significantly enhances credibility, even if tickets are not yet confirmed. Canadian visa officers place the highest priority on confirming the applicant's clear intention to return home after the tournament. Therefore, you should emphasize your ties to your home country, such as employment, family, studies, or property. Additionally, submitting supporting documents like World Cup-related materials, ticket confirmation, match schedules, and accommodation reservations will enhance the credibility of your application.

The “Purpose of Visit Letter” fans can prepare should be concise yet specific. Clearly state your personal details, travel itinerary, matches to attend, accommodation, financial plan, and reason for returning home. Attaching relevant supporting documents increases the likelihood of visa approval. This letter is not a mere formality but a key document conveying the applicant's sincerity to the officer.

The most critical point to note ahead of the World Cup is the authenticity of information. Recent social media posts claiming the Canadian government is issuing special visas for fans are unfounded. Canada already operates a multiple-entry TRV system, and the eTA itself allows multiple entries, so no new separate program has been created. Another source of fan confusion stems from a pre-sale ticket event run by the credit card company Visa. The “Visa” mentioned here refers to the payment method, not an entry visa. It is crucial not to be swayed by such misinformation and to always verify details through the official Canadian government website and FIFA's official pages.

Tickets for the matches must also be purchased exclusively through official channels. A pre-sale lottery for Visa cardholders began on September 10, 2025, followed by the winner purchase phase in October. General sales are scheduled for early 2026. Domestic fans seeking Canada match tickets may also gain separate lottery opportunities through the CanadaRed supporters group. In 2026, an official resale platform will be established, enabling safe resales at face value only. Tickets serve not just as admission passes but also as ‘proof of purpose for visit’ at borders, so they must be obtained through official channels.

Accommodation and transportation must also be arranged in advance. Toronto and Vancouver are expected to experience skyrocketing lodging costs and severe traffic congestion during the tournament as fans from around the world converge. Booking hotels, guesthouses, or Airbnbs as early as possible is advisable, and selecting locations near stadiums or with good public transit access is recommended for convenience. Toronto offers subway and train networks, while Vancouver utilizes the SkyTrain and bus systems. However, expect traffic congestion and longer wait times on game days, so allow ample travel time. If planning to cross the border to attend games in the US or Mexico, separate visas are required for each country. Notably, US visas can have processing times exceeding 300 days for certain countries, making it difficult to secure your desired schedule without starting preparations now.

Ultimately, if you wish to experience this tournament live on-site, you must begin preparing methodically now. Verify your passport, determine the appropriate TRV or eTA for your situation, and then proceed with early reservations for accommodation and transportation alongside securing match tickets. This is the wise strategy. To cheer alongside the national team for victory at the stadium and to personally feel the roar created by hundreds of thousands of spectators, you must first resolve the administrative procedures.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is not merely a sporting event; it is a global celebration uniting the North American continent and a catalyst for countless tourists visiting Canada. This opportunity is expected to strengthen Canada's image as a world-class tourism and immigration destination while also bringing positive effects to the local economy and tourism industry. However, individuals seeking to directly enjoy these benefits must remember that preparation is the key to success.
