Permanent residents or citizens can sponsor their family members for immigration. It encompasses sub-programs for spouses or common-law partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents.
Spousal Sponsorship.
Spousal sponsorship can occur within Canada or overseas. In Canada, the sponsored spouse/common-law partner can secure an open work permit, enabling work during the process. Permanent residents must process sponsorships within Canada, while Canadian Citizens can apply from overseas.

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship.
Since 2019, parent and grandparent sponsorship operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsors must reside in Canada and demonstrate financial ability to support both their own family and their parents or grandparents. Financial support is validated through three years of income documentation via Notice of Assessment (NOA). Sponsors commit to supporting parents and grandparents for 20 years.
